Apple Is Now Biggest Smartphone Vendor In The whole wide World

Apple Is Now Biggest Smartphone Vendor In The whole wide World: "As of now, Apple is the biggest smartphone vendor in the whole wide world. Previously, this spot was taken by Nokia however Apple has overtaken the Finnish company to clinch the top spot as the number 1 global smartphone vendor.

The comparison is done by comparing the number of units sold and the overall revenue generated. In its recent earnings call, Apple revealed that in Q3 2011, they sold more iPhone than they have ever had before, with their total earnings reaching $28.57 billion.

On the other hand Nokia, which used to be the biggest smartphone vendor, saw a 34% decline in unit sales in Q3 2011. A Financial Times report explains their dilemma:
Shipments of Nokia smartphones declined by 34 percent to 16.7m units, compared with the 20.3m iPhones shipped by Apple in its second quarter. Apple was already the biggest smartphone maker by revenue and profits, but the April-June period marked the first time it had surpassed Nokia in volume
Given Apple's phenomenal success with the iPhone, it seems next to impossible for Nokia to climb up the ladder once again. However, the future may be promising for the Finnish smartphone manufacturer considering the fact that they have made a $1 billion deal with Microsoft and will now use Windows Phone as the primary smartphone platform for all their future devices.
